| Current Toronto Time:
Newcomer helps others starting school

Imagine you are a teenager and a newcomer to Canada. You’re preparing for your first day in a Canadian school. Are you nervous?  Frightened? Are you worried about making friends and speaking the language? Wouldn’t it be great if there was someone, another student maybe, who could be there with a smile and a helping hand? Wouldn’t it be great if there was someone who understood what you are going through and wanted to show you the ropes? Well, in Toronto, Akenyélé Akintonal Febrissy, a student at  Le Collège Français, is making sure that newcomers in his school feel welcome. He is one of several youths volunteering as peer leaders in Le Programme d’accueil des nouvelles et des nouveaux arrivants (ANNA) in a year-long commitment. “The other peer leaders in the program helped me a lot,” he says. “I wanted the chance to do the same.”
