Shila Desai: The fabric of a life made in Canada

Shila Desai is used to not being taken too seriously at first glance. “I’m 5 feet one inch, brown, female, in a testosterone-charged domain. There was a lot of, ‘Oh, what does she know?’ says the Vice-President, Marketing and Finance of Sald Industries and TacWear Group. “It takes time to gain credibility.”

Sald is an iso-certified company, the first clothing manufacturer in Ontario to gain the certification. Its high-performance garments are used by nypd, lapd swat teams in Canada and the us, Heavy Search and Rescue teams, us marines, and the Department of Homeland Security. Sald also supplies to Running Room and Eddie Bauer, etc. They were instrumental in developing Freshfx, the silver-embedded fibre that is valued for its antibacterial and anti-odour properties.

Desai is also an author and leads culinary tours to different parts of the world. She tells newcomers not to give up on their passion.

“You have to feed your passion to feel whole. It’s never too late to be the person you could have been.

“Look at me. I wasted 10 years, but when I got going, I forged ahead. I write at two in the morning if I have to, but I make the time for it. If you have a dream, don’t second guess yourself. Go for it.”
