Amrit Mangat holds the distinction of being the first South Asian female Member of the Provincial Parliament in Ontario.
The MPP for Mississauga-Brampton South, was named Parliamentary Assistant to the Minister of Transportation in the province of Ontario.
“I look forward to working on behalf of Ontarians to improve and strengthen our transportation systems,” she says. “Transportation is an issue that is close to the heart of Peel residents and I will work with the minister to improve our roadways and transit systems so that Ontarians experience a more efficient and easier commute.”
“For the past seven years, our government has been working hard to strengthen the economy and improve the schools and health care our families depend on,” said Ontario Premier Dalton McGuinty. “That plan is working, but there’s still more to do. Amrit Mangat in her new role will help us continue building new opportunities for Ontario families.”
Mangat’s early years in Canada were not easy. The teacher from India was judged not qualified enough to teach. Not one to let rejections keep her from achieving her goals, she got her teacher’s licence in Canada.
“My husband and I thought, let’s keep working hard; if one has the courage, no mountain is too difficult to climb,” says Mangat.
