Top 3 tips for your next career move

Whether you plan on returning to the classroom or back to the office after a summer vacation, it’s a time to regroup, think about finishing personal projects, and start setting goals for the months ahead.

For some, it’s a time to take a big step and initiate a career change. As a guidance counsellor for TVO’s Independent Learning Centre (ILC), Tony Gradini has advised many students on the education required to support a career transition.

Here are his top three tips on where to start:

1. Finish where you’ve left off. Whether it’s picking up a couple of credits to finish your high school diploma or going back to college to finish your designation, commit to finishing. Online classes make it easier to fit a course into a busy schedule because you can study anywhere at any time. TVO’s ILC (ilc.org) offers affordable online high school courses in a variety of subjects, making finishing high school attainable for those 18 years and older.

2. Make an upgrade. Admissions to post-secondary education are competitive and so is the workforce. If less than satisfactory grades are preventing you from getting accepted into the program of your choice, consider upgrading. Retaking required courses can help you achieve the higher overall average needed for acceptance.

3. Pick-up what’s required. Some career transitions span across different industries, requiring education in an entirely new field. For those whose high school days are a distant memory, the ILC offers distance education courses in traditional high school subjects from math and science to arts and social science. Picking up extra credits to fulfill admission requirements can be done online for $40 per course registration.
